only when necessary.
Topwind’s Bat Protection System:
the best solution for ecology and efficiency.
Who is it for?
For wind farm owners and operators
The Bat Protection System (BPS) has been developed for owners and operators of wind turbines who have to comply with ecological regulations regarding bat protection. This applies in particular to turbines for which the permit:
- Includes a monitoring obligation to record bat activity.
- Includes mandatory curtailing to minimize the number of bat victims.
This obligation may apply to an entire wind farm in some cases, whereas in other situations only specific turbines may be relevant, e.g. if they are close to wooded areas where bats are active.
Topwind helps you meet these requirements while avoiding unnecessary downtime and maintaining the efficiency of your turbines.

Why?
Financial impact of bat-related downtime
Downtime caused by bat activity is becoming increasingly expensive due to rising imbalance costs and more efficient turbines. Since modern turbines generate a lot of power even at low wind speeds, curtailment has greater financial consequences than before.
By way of comparison: a 3 MW turbine (2019) used to lose an average of €2,500 per year at <5 m/s, whereas this can now amount to over €17,000 per year for 6-7 MW turbines. The Bat Protection System (BPS) minimizes these losses by optimizing bat-related downtimes. By means of continuous monitoring, the system ensures that your turbine only stops when really necessary.
Smart bat protection without unnecessary production losses
At Topwind, we know that you want to be a responsible and profitable wind turbine owner. To achieve this, you need a system that allows your turbines to perform optimally while still protecting bats. Stricter ecological rules force you to switch off turbines unnecessarily, leading to the loss of valuable production time. Not only does this lead to unnecessary downtime, it also has an impact on your returns.
Our Bat Protection System (BPS) monitors and detects bat activity with precision and controls turbines on the basis of dynamic time blocks. Through a combination of AI call detection and standstill models, only necessary standstills are implemented based on representative observations and current meteorological data. This not only offers higher levels of production and bat protection, but also clear, insightful reports for the competent authority.

Renner Energies – Wind farm Gesves
Wind farm Gesves in Belgium, owned by Renner Energies, consists of six 3.2 MW turbines (total 19.2 MW). In line with the permit, the BPS system is active on a single turbine. Smart curtailment will soon be implemented to further optimize standstills.

Eneco Maasvlakte 2
Wind farm Maasvlakte 2 in Rotterdam has 22 turbines and generates more than 400 GWh of green electricity each year. Topwind has installed ultrasound microphones on two Vestas turbines to monitor bat activity. This records the presence of bats, after which it is determined whether the standstill can be optimized.

Jaap Rodenburg and Almeerse Wind
Wind farm Jaap Rodenburg, located near Almere Pampus, consists of 10 turbines: 8 owned by the insurance group ASR and 2 by the energy cooperative Almeerse Wind. The Topwind Bat Protection System (BPS) is active on all 10 turbines. This project is an example of blanket curtailment.
How does the Bat Protection System work?
1. Monitoring
Once a bat exemption permit is issued, turbine owners are still obliged to conduct monitoring. This takes place by means of an ultrasound microphone in the nacelle and, for turbines higher than 120 meters, also at tip height. The collected data is stored immediately and can be accessed remotely. This eliminates the risk of data loss or delays and means that everything is accurately recorded from day one.
2. Protection
The BPS system offers two methods for ensuring an optimal balance between protection and efficiency. Blanket Curtailment continuously monitors the weather activity and stops the turbine at pre-programmed values. Smart Curtailment stops turbines based on fixed conditions and bat activity, for minimum downtime and maximum protection.

Blanket Curtailment
Automatic start/stop function based on preventive calendar control in which boundary conditions such as period/time, temperature, precipitation and wind speed are decisive.

Smart Curtailment
Blanket Curtailment supplemented with real-time protection based on detection of bat activity. This takes place by means of an ultrasound microphone at tip height, thus preventing unnecessary production losses.
Avoid unnecessary downtime and take advantage of the BPS system:

This unique combination of advantages makes the system the most complete solution for modern wind farm operators who wish to seamlessly combine ecology and economy.
Frequently asked questions
The Netherlands is a densely occupied country in which you sometimes have to weigh up which natural interests you want to prioritize. On the one hand, we want to make the country more sustainable and generate more green energy with wind turbines. On the other, we wish to protect the ecology and not let birds and bats pay the price for green energy generation. For this reason, the Nature Conservation Act requires ecological research to be conducted for every new wind farm that is developed. This may indicate that measures must be taken to protect local bats.

The BPS system is active from 1 April to 1 October. The start date of April 1 was chosen because this is when most bat species come out of hibernation, which usually ends between mid-March and mid-April. After hibernation, bats are severely emaciated and immediately start looking for food, which causes a sudden increase in activity in the air – also around wind turbines. In order to provide bats with optimal protection, the BPS system must therefore be activated by 1 April at the latest. Since hibernation usually begins in October or November, the system can be deactivated in the intervening months.
It depends on the permit requirements. One BPS system can apply to an entire wind farm or an individual turbine. Only one turbine may be relevant in some cases – for example if it is close to a forested area in which bats are active – while the other turbines pose no risk.
No, the system is purely for detecting bats. Completely different systems exist for bird protection.
This depends on the location and the outcome of the ecological research. A monitoring obligation is sometimes imposed initially and, based on the results, it is then determined whether standstill provisions should be set up for the subsequent period. In this case, it is a good idea to keep tracking the course and dynamics of the bat activity around your turbines over the years. Why bring turbines to a stop as stipulated years ago, if the dynamic has changed in the meantime? Topwind’s BPS system gives you maximum insights and allows you to use this data in the right way to start a conversation with the competent authority. One solution could be to apply different curtailment methods at different times.
Yes, it definitely will. See the explanation above.

Yes, Topwind also supplies other systems for wind turbines. This is because at Topwind, we don’t like standard solutions. We would rather provide custom solutions for our clients, working with them to develop innovative solutions for a specific wind farm. Certainly now that turbines have become so much larger. After all, these machines still produce a lot of energy at low wind speeds. Topwind always seeks out technical optimizations when doing so. After all, technical innovation is in our DNA. Based on this ‘healthy dissatisfaction’ with standard solutions, our team offers smart solutions for passing bats, ice settlement and aircraft, among other things:
- By means of our BPS (Bat Protection System), we use tools such as AI to determine whether bats are actually present during the prescribed time blocks for downtime. This innovation will allow us to avoid more unnecessary downtimes in the future;
- By means of our IPS (Ice Protection System), we are able to deal with winter ice settlement around the turbine in an optimal way. Ice accumulation can potentially create risky situations. But is there truly a danger? With accurate sensors and a camera on the turbine, we know the local situation like no other. As a result, we can make decisions that are best for that one turbine;
- With our ADLS (Aircraft Detection Lighting System), we know the precise location of the aircraft and can leave the aircraft lighting on the turbine switched off for as long as possible. And the longer the lights-off time, the better for the environment!
